Obituary for Charles J Johnson Sr.

E. Sandwich - Charles James Johnson, 80, passed away on December 31, 2016 due to complications from pneumonia. He entered peacefully into eternal life surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

Charles was born on August 11, 1936 to Edward and Louise (Timm) Johnson, immigrants from the St. Helena islands. Raised in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, he spent much of his time surrounded by his eight siblings. When he wasn’t with them, Charles learned from an early age the importance of hard work and good work ethics by delivering papers on his daily paper route and working on the farm where he milked cows, collected eggs, fed the livestock, and much much more during the early morning hours before walking to school.

Although he didn’t receive a high-level of education, Charles was an extremely intelligent individual and enlisted in the United States Army in 1952. Over the next 4 years he traveled overseas to different countries like Germany and France until 1956 when he left with honorable discharge as Private First Class.

Over the next 19 years Charles worked at at various jobs including a Fish packing company, a sewing company, and did construction and foundation work. During this time he had 2 children Kimberly and Charles Jr Johnson. Spending much of his time devoted to taking care of his family and working long hours at work, Charles never had the time to find his partner in life.

In 1975, Charles met his soul mate, the love of his life, his future wife, and the woman he would spend the rest of his life with, Loreena (Lori) Marie Neves. On December 26, 1977 they had their first son, Justin Everett Johnson in Fall River, Massachusetts. May 30, 1980, 2 years later, they had their second child, Leeanora Jane Johnson, also in Fall River, Massachusetts. The family moved to Cape Cod in 1984 and got married September 22, 1984. A few months later, they had their third child, Candice Lee Johnson on January 10, 1985.

In 1985, Charles moved to Sandwich with his family where he spent almost 32 years until his death. He spent his time working doing concrete foundations, masonry, and clamming until he retired in 2006 due to his deteriorating health. He was a very hard working man that made many sacrifices so that he could provide for his family and give them everything and anything that they wanted. Over the next 10 years he was finally able to spend time with his family and found much joy in caring for his grandchildren.

Charles was a very simple man that found enjoyment in the smallest of things. He was your everyday handyman that enjoyed repairing things whether it was taking things apart or putting them back together. He never used the instruction manuals and even if he didn’t know how to fix something he never gave up until he fixed them. He loved playing his weekly lottery numbers and scratching scratch tickets, especially Texas Hold Em Poker or Crossword Puzzle. He always had that lucky hand and would win quite often. Charles also enjoyed playing cribbage with his kids, especially when he would skunk them. If he wasn’t doing any of the above, he loved most sports including golf, hockey, basketball, and baseball. His favorite sport and team was football and he loved watching the Patriots. The rest of his time was spent with his wife, children, or the rest of his family. He enjoyed his grandchildren and was their favorite Papa.

Everyone and anyone that met Charles remembered him for his beautiful smile and great personality. He was always humming no matter what he did, and loved to conversate with anyone that he came in contact with.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Loreena “Lori” (Neves) Johnson of Sandwich; children Kimberly Johnson, address unknown, Charles (Chucky) Johnson Jr of New Bedford, Justin Johnson and partner Ally Mitchell of West Warwick, Rhode Island, Leeanora Johnson and partner Cory Pavlas of Sandwich, and Candice Johnson of Hyannis; his grandchildren Darian, Jaleesia, Alex, Isiah, Monica, Rashaun, Precious, Bryson, Cayden, Samuel, and Sophia Johnson of Massachusetts; great grandchildren’; brothers Eric and wife Lucky Johnson of Mashpee, and Harold Johnson of Dennis;sister Carole Johnson of New Bedford.
