Obituary for Mary Ellen Crowley (Crowley)

Mary Ellen Crowley (Crowley)
Mary Ellen Crowley, 62, of Damariscotta, Maine, formerly of Marshfield, MA, died on January 21, 2018, at the home of her sister surrounded by family and friends after a long illness. She was a daughter of the late James and Joan Barrett Crowley of Marshfield and spent her formative years in the Pembroke, MA, area, graduating from Silver Lake High School in 1973. She attended Boston College, majoring in English and philosophy, and in many ways “worked” as a philosopher for the remainder of her life. Mary Ellen was employed in the family business at the Airport Sub Shop in Marshfield for many years where she made lifelong community connections. For several years she managed the Council Travel Agency, in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA, where she provided skilled leadership and implemented creative marketing strategies. Always a free spirit, Mary Ellen then set off on her own as an independent travel agent and was able to work out of her home from Boston, later from Florida, and then from Maine using her trademark “Travelmaryellen.” She fell in love with her northern neighboring states after spending time there in the mid-1990s and moved first to Vermont and then settled in Lincoln County, Maine, where she worked as manager of Lincoln County Television for ten years. There, she brought great creativity and thoughtful programming to the station in addition to innovative community-based projects. Mary Ellen quickly acquired the multitude of skills required to deliver a quality public television service, making many fast friends from all walks of life along the way. Mary Ellen was a voracious reader, a supporter of the arts, a connoisseur of locally sourced farm-to-table food, and a world traveler, in addition to being a formidable card and game player and able to successfully debate anyone on any topic at any time. Always open to adventure, she learned to fly, along with her father, at Marshfield Municipal Airport until a seized engine, terrified instructor, and subsequent emergency landing took the thrill out of the endeavor. She had a fierce belief in universal rights and fairness for all and advocated tirelessly for the oppressed as a member of Amnesty International. Her love of animals translated to caring for many pets over the years including dogs, cats, and, at one point, chickens. Before her final illness she was caring for several feral cats in addition to her house cat, Dottie. She also leaves behind her sister, Patricia Crowley, and nephew, Michael Crowley, both of Marshfield and her brother, Jay Crowley, of Plymouth, along with her Uncle Russ of Warsaw, New York; several cousins; and a wide cadre of friends from New England and beyond. She will be missed for her brilliant, unique mind and joie de vivre, as well as her perpetual curiosity and willingness to take risks, which enlivened and emboldened her existence and brought her much joy. Finally, we will miss that contagious laughter, which, in the end, she valued most of all. She would wish to thank, and her family and care-giving friends want to thank, the Cranberry Hospice Staff for their skilled and sensitive care in recent weeks and the many friends from her beloved community in Maine who assisted her with medical appointments, sponsored a fund-raiser, helped her pack and move, stayed in close touch, and were of great loving support to her until the end. She said that she was so lucky to have made such caring friends. A private memorial celebration of Mary Ellen’s life is being planned for a future date. Memorial contributions in her honor can be made to Lincoln County TV, 29 Sheepscot Rd., Newcastle, ME 04553, and the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, PO Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.
