Obituary for Virginia Bowry Glickman (Bowry)

Virginia Bowry Glickman (Bowry)
Virginia Bowry Glickman "Ginny" 98 died peacefully in her home on April 15, 2017.
She was born in Everett Ma to E Norman and Mildred Bowry. She married Karl Ullman in 1940 and raised 4 children with him in Northampton, MA until his death in 1969. She married Charles Glickman in 1972 and spent many years with him in Marshfield, Ma until his passing in 2014.

Ginny’s life was defined by her passion for bettering the communities around her and her tenacity in driving improvements. This is exemplified by the wide breath of volunteer work she completed over the years. In her early years, while child rearing, she managed to coordinate a city wide Girl Scouts of America program. She then went on to create a position as the first Director of Volunteers at Cooley Dickenson Hospital in Northampton where she worked for 15 years. She developed the first New England Association, Director of Hospital Volunteer Services which remains a strong and viable group to this day. She was a member of the league of Woman Voters and treasurer and secretary of Widening Horizons, Concord Ma. This was a program that provided information on career services and continuing education for women. She also served on the committee to preserve Dwyer Farm in Marshfield, Ma. which is now the Audubon Society’s Danielle Webster Wildlife Sanctuary.

In 1976 she found a cause that would become her primary focus for the remainder of her life - The North River Arts Society. At the time of her arrival this was an almost defunct non-profit organization that had served the Marshfield community, fostering participation and appreciation of the arts. Ginny re-energized the organization and helped put it on the path to become the community pillar that it is today. She remained a vital member of the organization into her 90’s, holding numerous offices and heading up many programs. She was instrumental in moving the Festival of the Arts to Old Main Street in Marshfield Hills and most recently was highly influential in the revitalization of the G.A.R. Hall. She has been recognized by the NRAS for her efforts and is fondly remembered by many young artists for her support, encouragement and nurturing over the years.

She moved to The Village in Duxbury 3 years ago and quickly identified a new opportunity to expand the resident’s art program, driving increased participation in art instruction and working with The Village to deliver public displays of their art. She was an accomplished artist and remained active right to the end, with bridge, gardening, book club, art classes and croquet.

She is survived by her children, Scott Ullman of Harwich Ma, Karl (Terry) Ullman of Kingston Ma, and Cynthia Ullman White and her husband James, of Marshfield Hills, Ma, Joan Bacon and husband Robert of Plymouth Ma; her step children, Thomas Glickman of North Miami, FL. and his wife Catherine; Kenneth Glickman of Silver Springs, MD. and his wife Deborah; KR Glickman of North Adams, Ma. and by her sister Betty Lou Bears and her husband Whit of Alexandria, Virginia; five grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at the North Community Church, 720 Old Main Street, Marshfield Hills on April 27 at 11:15. Burial will be at the Wadsworth cemetery in Sudbury Ma. Donations can be made to The North River Arts Society, 157 Main Street, Marshfield Hills 02051
